Prom.

noun

a formal dance, esp. one held by a high school or college class at the end of an academic year.

Unfortunately, in Mississippi, LGBTQ youth haven’t had much support in their schools around this normative event.

Yet this year, a local youth group had the opportunity to maximize how they envisioned a second chance at prom.  This past weekend I had the gracious opportunity to attend Second Chance Prom, with my dad as my date. I got all dolled up, and was nervous, just as my first prom.

This historic event, but not the first to be held, hosted youth from across the state to jam out to Hey Chance, ?uestlove and his hypeman Yahmean, with a guest appearance from Lance Bass.

What was so amazing was the effort that was put in to the event by student leaders who have worked weeks to ensure the success of the event. Successful it was. The space was loving, embracing, free-feeling, and most importantly, safe. It was elaborate, and deserving.

It was a second chance for many, but for most it was the first.

First.

-adjective

preceding all others in time or space or degree.
